Every animal at EARS – Endangered Animal Rescue Sanctuary has a unique story. Some but NOT all were rescued from illegal ownership, others from failed roadside attractions or situations of extreme neglect. What they all share is a second chance at life — and a forever home where they are safe, respected, and cared for.

Here at our sanctuary in Citra, Florida, each resident receives species-specific care, customized enrichment, and ample space to live out their lives in peace. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on public support to feed, house, and provide medical care to every animal — from the largest tiger to the smallest monkey.

COUGARS

Cougars, also known as mountain lions or pumas, are powerful and adaptable big cats native to the Americas. Many of our cougars arrived after being kept illegally as exotic pets or exploited in traveling shows. They are shy by nature and prefer quiet, shaded habitats with room to roam. At EARS, they enjoy spacious enclosures, climbing platforms, and privacy to match their solitary instincts.

LEOPARDS

Leopards are known for their striking spotted coats and incredible agility. While beautiful, these cats have been victims of the exotic animal trade due to their rare appearance. Some of our leopards came from unsafe environments and now thrive in secure, enriched enclosures. Visitors can learn about their stealthy behaviors, varied diets, and unique personalities.

LIGERS

A rare hybrid of a male lion and female tiger, Ligers, Do not exist in the wild as tigers and lions do not roam the wild side by side. As with any crossbreeding, there can be health problems that may shorten their life. We provide a home for ligers from time to time and appreciate their magnificent size as well as personality and provide the care they may need to live a long happy life.

LIONS

Often seen as symbols of power and majesty, lions are social animals that suffer greatly in isolation. Many of our lions were kept in inappropriate conditions without space, stimulation, or proper diets. At EARS, they benefit from improved habitats and the chance to bond with fellow pride members when appropriate. They are among our most vocal residents — you can often hear their roars across the sanctuary.

TIGERS

Tigers are among some of the most frequently exploited big cats in the world. Some of our tigers arrived underweight, stressed, or scarred from past abuse. Today, they live in large, enriched enclosures with pools, platforms, and natural shade. Watching a tiger lounge in the sun or cool off in a water feature is a powerful reminder of what sanctuary truly means.

BEARS

From black bears to other subspecies, the bears at EARS were often kept in cramped cages with no access to proper nutrition or natural behaviors like digging, climbing, and foraging. Our bear habitats feature logs, pools, soft earth, and plenty of room to roam. Their care includes seasonal enrichment to mimic changes in the wild and ensure mental stimulation.

PRIMATES

Our primates — including various species of monkeys — come from a range of backgrounds, including pet surrenders and small-scale roadside zoos. Primates are highly social, intelligent animals that require specialized care. At EARS, we provide them with mentally engaging enrichment, opportunities to interact, and plenty of space to climb, play, and explore.

MISCELLANEOUS RESIDENTS

Not all of our residents fall into a single category. From smaller exotic mammals to unique birds and reptiles, our “Miscellaneous” section features animals who deserve just as much care and attention. These residents are often overlooked but play a big role in the diversity of our sanctuary. Each has its own story and specialized habitat.
